my top three (nonfiction)

These are the main books I recommend to all debaters (and frankly, to anyone—not just young students) who want to understand the world better, be open to more viewpoints, and think more critically:

Less is More - Jason Hickel

This book discusses everything from history, philosophy, environment, social issues, technology, and more in a way that is clear to understand and makes you rethink your unquestioned assumptions.

The Art of Logic - Eugenia Cheng

The author is a math professor who is very good at explaining logic simply in a way that connects complicated ideas to our lived experiences.

Talking to My Daughter - Yanis Varoufakis

This is a great book that explains the economic system that determines so much of our modern world, in a way that's interesting and easy to follow.

More books

Sophie's World is a great book that introduces a lot of the history and ideas from philosophy.

Anne Frank reminds us that the young generation is often wiser and braver than most of the adults.

Learning about the universe is infinitely interesting, super fun, and very humbling too.

Why are rich countries rich?

"Introduction” Book Series

These series are very good. “Introducing… A Graphic Guide” obviously has more illustrations and “A Very Short Introduction” series is a lot more text and at around 100 pages, unfortunately still probably not short enough for many kids raised on screens. Search “graphic guide” or “very short introduction” on Taobao or Amazon.
